Customs Clearance
Customs Clearance Made Simple
Before imported goods can be released in Australia, they must meet Australian Border Force customs requirements and biosecurity rules. Fastrak Logistics manages the whole process for you.
We collect and check your documents, arrange clearance through our licensed customs broker partners, coordinate any biosecurity inspections, and deliver your goods to your door once they are released.
Because we also manage your sea freight and air freight, your shipment is prepared for clearance before it even arrives.

How Customs Clearance Works
- Send your documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, and any permits or certificates.
- Classification and valuation: the licensed customs broker classifies your goods under the Australian tariff and calculates duty and GST.
- Entry lodged: the import declaration is lodged with the Australian Border Force, ideally before your goods arrive.
- Duty and GST paid: we confirm the amount payable, which must be paid before release.
- Biosecurity: any inspection or treatment required by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is arranged.
- Release and delivery: your goods are delivered to your door or into storage.

- give a full and accurate description of the goods, their value and origin;
- send documents as early as possible;
- tell us about anything regulated, such as food, plants, timber, chemicals or batteries; and
- keep your commercial records for the period required by law.

Customs Clearance FAQs
Do I need a customs broker to import goods into Australia?
Not always, but most businesses use one. Goods valued at AUD 1,000 or less can usually be cleared without a full import declaration, although some goods are excluded. Above that, a full import declaration is required, and a licensed customs broker makes sure it is lodged correctly.
How long does customs clearance take?
It depends on how complete your documents are and whether the Australian Border Force or biosecurity officers select your goods for inspection. Having your paperwork ready before the goods arrive is the best way to avoid delays.
What documents do I need for customs clearance?
Usually a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, and for sea containers a packing declaration. Some goods also need permits, certificates of origin or treatment certificates.
How are import duty and GST calculated?
Duty depends on the tariff classification of your goods and their customs value, and may be reduced under a free trade agreement. GST of 10% is generally charged on the value of the goods plus duty, international freight and insurance.
What happens if my goods are held for inspection?
We coordinate with the authorities and keep you updated. Any inspection, treatment or storage costs ordered by the authorities are passed on to the importer.
